His Elavon Solutions:
My wife and I were both in law enforcement, and because we traveled a lot, we spent a lot of time taking our dogs to pet resorts. We also spent a lot of time making sure our dogs would get the attention they needed. And it was inconvenient—we would have to board the dogs before we left and pick them up the day after we got back.
So we started Airport Park 'N Bark Pet Resort at the airport, less than a mile from the runways. The whole concept is just to make it easier for the traveler, so they can bring their pet with them on the day they're flying out and know their pet's going to a facility that understands them.
I'd much rather be with 15 or 20 dogs, playing and interacting. That's what I got into the business for. And, being the owner, I get caught up in the responsibilities of running the operation. There are days when the hectic, day-to-day part of the business gets to you, and to relax, I let the staff take a break and I'll go out and run the groups, and enjoy just being around the dogs. That's what I got into the business for—for them.
I did years of research to understand the business aspect of this before ever getting into it. And I spent a lifetime developing a passion for the dogs. I've had it since I was a kid. I used to get in quite a bit of trouble bringing stray dogs home all the time.
With dogs, you can have a bad day and to have that dog there when you come home—they greet you and let you know that everything's great. The best part of the day is the simple love of the dog and his love of you. Just having that passion for dogs made me want to get into the business.
We'd been in the business for quite a few years and we'd had several merchant companies for credit card service processing. You got the feeling that their position was, "Okay, here's our product. We'll see you. Let us know if you have any problems."
The agent made sure we had what we needed. The most important thing with Elavon really has been the personal connection I've had with the reps.
Elavon has a Scoreboard, which for me is the most useful thing I’ve gotten out of any merchant company ever. It actually shows me the ebbs and flows of my company and lets me know when I need marketing and when I don't. That's a tool I've never had before Elavon.
I pull up the Scoreboard and see how everything is running for the day, for the month, to see if I'm up or down. And that helps me gauge how many employees I need, if I need to increase or decrease during the slow time.
It feels good to know you have a third party that cares enough to give me that much information to help me run my business. And so, with Elavon, they're really more of a partner.
